New website to promote the role of red meat in the diet

The red meat industry has launched a new website to promote the positive role of red meat in the diet.

The website, www.meatandhealth.com, is designed to remind consumers and health professionals that red meat is a great source of protein, heart healthy fats, vitamins and minerals (particularly iron).

BPEX Head of Marketing Chris Lamb said
“Media coverage over the past few months has frequently portrayed red meat as an ‘unhealthy’ food. In fact, the reverse is true - red meat is an excellent source of protein and packed with valuable nutrients, vitamins and minerals,” Chris said.

“Information contained on the site will assist consumers and healthcare professionals in determining the true position of meat in a healthy, balanced diet and to understand that negative comment from the media, scientists and academics is not always what it appears to be.

Leading nutritionist Juliette Kellow who will provide answers to questions about healthy eating on the site echoes this point, “A balanced diet is what all dietitians recommend. Excluding whole food groups such as meat can also put you at risk of other health issues such as iron and protein deficiency.”

Meatandhealth.com was set up more than 10 years ago, in recognition that health professionals and their patients needed balanced and accurate advice on healthy eating. The new look site will offer interactive features, up-to-date news items, topical opinion pieces from leading health professionals and recipes for good health.

Chris Lamb says the industry has always been careful to promote the role of red meat as part of a balanced diet.

“It is our strong belief that a balanced diet including red meat, and rich in fruit, vegetables and foods from all the main food groups, together with regular exercise, sensible drinking and avoiding smoking is the best way to achieve overall good health,” Chris said.

“We want the site to be somewhere that health professionals and consumers can visit to get accurate and up-to-date information about the important role red meat plays in the diet.”
